GMAT Exam 2024 Pattern Details

The GMAT is a computer-based exam with English as the medium of instruction. The GMAT has a scoring range of 200 to 800 points. The score earned by candidates on average is between 400-500. In instance, a score of 760+ on your exam is a 99 percentile. The basic structure, section-by-section time duration, and score range may all be understood by looking at the tables below.

The GMAT Exam is divided into four areas, as previously stated: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. The GMAT Exam Pattern differs significantly from the Exam Patterns of other MBA Entrance Exams. The following are some of the highlights of the GMAT Exam:

  • The GMAT comprises 80 questions and a time limit of 3 hours and 7 minutes. The exam has no set GMAT 2024 syllabus and is made up of questions that test analytical and reasoning abilities.
  • The GMAT exam includes a time limit for each portion, which varies depending on the section.
  • Candidates have the option of taking the GMAT Exam in one of three different order combinations.
  • The questions in the Integrated Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are computer adaptive, which means they can’t be skipped, the page can’t be returned, and the answers can’t be modified once they’ve been marked.
  • Multiple-choice questions make up the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning portions.
  • An essay question is part of the Analytical Writing Assessment.
  • Non-MCQs make up Integrated Reasoning.
  • The GMAT Exam does not have any negative marking.
  • Between each exam, there are 8 minute optional breaks, the timing of which must be specified while picking the order.

GMAT Exam Pattern 2024: Section-Wise Division

The GMAT Exam Format is divided into sections as follows:

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

There is only one question in the AWA part, which is a brief piece with an argument. In the form of an essay, the candidate is asked to assess the argument and point out any flaws. This portion assesses the candidate’s critical reasoning skills as well as their ability to communicate coherently in writing.

Note:- The overall score can grow or fall as a result of revaluation. The results will be available in an online format. There will be no refund if you have already submitted a request for revaluation. The AWA score is not factored into the overall GMAT score.

Integrated Reasoning (IR)

This portion evaluates a candidate’s ability to synthesise huge volumes of data in order to answer problems. It contains questions that require the candidate to read graphs, charts, and word problems in order to answer the questions. There are a total of 12 questions that a candidate must answer in 30 minutes. It means that a candidate must complete an integrated reasoning question in an average of 2.5 minutes, which is a short amount of time.

Note:- The IR section score is not integrated with the GMAT verbal and quantitative scores, but is offered separately in single-digit increments between 1 and 8. B-schools take the IR score as is and look at the candidate’s overall attempt to accuracy ratio. To pass the IR section, you must have lightning-quick reasoning skills.

Quantitative Aptitude Skill

The quantitative reasoning portion assesses both the candidate’s mathematical and reasoning abilities. It includes the below two sections, namely; problem- solving skill and data sufficiency. This area has a score range of 6 to 51. Candidates have 62 minutes to wrap up 31 multiple-choice questions.

Verbal Reasoning

This portion assesses the candidate’s ability to communicate in English. There will be 36 questions in this segment, with a time limit of 65 minutes. The Verbal Reasoning part emphasizes on the following areas:

  • Reading Comprehension: This component assesses the candidate’s reasoning and reading abilities. It also examines the candidate’s writing style.
  • Sentence Correction: Sentence correction assesses a student’s grammatical skills and the structure of the language he or she is using.
  • Critical Reasoning: Critical reasoning assesses the candidate’s decision-making abilities.

Most of the surface aspects are covered by the GMAT Exam Pattern stated above. The portions of the GMAT Exam Pattern 2024 are listed in the table below:

GMAT Exam Pattern 2024: How Does Computer Adaptive Test Work?

GMAT Exam Pattern has been built to respond in accordance with the candidates’ cognitive ability. Online scoring is a new feature of GMAT computer adaptive assessment. This is due to the fact that GMAT administrators believe it is more practical to obtain a computed score, and candidates receive test results (unofficial scorecard) immediately after the examination is completed.

In a computer adaptive mode, the GMAT is evaluated as follows:

  • If you correctly answer the first question or item, the algorithm recalculates your ability based on all of your prior responses and their level of difficulty.
  • The system selects the next question that a candidate has a 50% chance of correctly answering.
  • The following set of questions is moderate in complexity, allowing the system to absorb as much information as possible about the candidate’s degree of preparedness.
  • Each question is created in a psychometric fashion to measure your analytical abilities, therefore it may appear difficult to answer. So, if you come across an exceedingly easy question after answering an exceptionally difficult one, don’t freak out.
  • The overall score computation becomes more accurate when each question is answered correctly.
  • All questions must be answered, and once submitted, the answer cannot be modified.

How is the GMAT AWA score determined?

This section’s score is based on two independent scores provided by two evaluators. The parts of the section evaluated by these evaluators are listed below.

  • The electronic system evaluates the flow of writing, sentence construction, and basic approach. The examiner manually evaluates the written structure, flow of ideas, argument analysis, and specified instances to justify the presence of logical reasoning.
  • If a student is interested in revaluation, they should be aware that they can only apply once. In addition, after filing the updated request, he or she must wait 20 days.

How GMAT score is calculated for Integrated Reasoning?

The grading scheme for Integrated Reasoning is compatible with the new GMAT exam pattern 2024. It is not, however, a computer-adaptive segment. All of the questions are of the multiple-choice variety. The integrated reasoning score is provided separately from your overall GMAT score and has no bearing on it. As a result, the scores on the other GMAT portions are unaffected.

The IR score ranges from 1 to 8. (reported in 1-point intervals). Following the completion of the paper, candidates will obtain unofficial IR test reports. The % of IR score, which will be assessed by your targeted B-Schools, will be included in the official score report given on the result day.
